Will the last person leaving the Kerry-Edwards Headquarters please turn out the lights?
As much as it pains me to do so, I must offer my heartfelt thanks to Senator Kerry.

Thank you, Senator, for avoiding a long, drawn out, protracted and litigated end to this election cycle. You could have done it. It was within your rights to do so. Somewhere inside you found the guy who didn't want to go down in history as an Algore. For this, I have no doubt that the nation is truly grateful. You took the statesman's exit. Well done.

As elections are as close as we get (thankfully) to Civil War in this country, I am reminded of the remarks of Abraham Lincoln as he began his second term:

With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in theright as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work weare in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne thebattle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherisha just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.

Here endeth the lesson.
